Solar and Positive Energy @ Habana Outpost
Habana Outpost, located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn on their April, 2012 opening day. Habana is run by solar energy so its only open through the warmer seasons.
The line is literally out the door and into the street. (So you have to be prepared to wait). Of course after waiting a full fifteen minutes on the food and drink line, there was an announcement that you can also order from the drink and corn line....I thought corn was food but whatever, the day late, dollar short announcement did move us further up on the line because most of us actually wanted just a drink and some roasted corn.
Me. I wanted a burrito.....and a margarita....still two items but who am I to challenge their system. It works.
Because the lines are usually out the door, the smart thing for you to do, is to order as many frozen margaritas (or mojitos) as you can while you are already there on the line, with your cash, because your plastic is NO GOOD there unless you make a dash for the ATM machine when you notice the sign behind the register that says, "CASH ONLY".
Me. I ordered four frozen margaritas (2 regulars, one mango and one strawberry)....and a burrito.
There is a system that you need to be aware of upon your visit to Habana. ALWAYS BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU. Because one of you will have to scan the area for seats, and sit there, while the other orders the drinks. There is no need to worry about balancing your burrito on your head because you have time to find somewhere to sit, with your drinks, before they shout your name out from the food wagon.
Don't get me wrong, it may sound confusing but its actually pretty cool. As cool as the music and the DJ on the ones and two's giving off that 80's block party vibe...or family reunion, depending on who you are sitting next to. On this particular day we sat next to a biker who was all too happy to join in with our 90's music sing-a-long, a la tipsy chicks.
Try the grilled chicken burrito its delicious and huge, so you can share it with that extra person you brought with you to hold the seats down. Don't forget to order your sides/toppings at the register because they will not honor the fact that you forgot to, when you get to the food wagon. It's just your tough luck, wash it down with those frozen margaritas you ordered. I don't want to take away from the roasted corn either, it is delicious. No matter how many times I've had one, I still can't figure out what it is that they put ON the corn other than paprika....at least that was my guess. I want to assume that there's mayonnaise on it as well, but then again I don't because that would completely turn me off. I've learned to order two because one just isn't enough.
All in all its a great outdoor place to hang out and listen to music, and possibly get a few trinkets that are being sold at the tables placed around the outpost. You can't help to be in a good mood there, especially after a few margaritas (or mojitos).
From my lips to your ears,
